#FF20 Borat Subsequent Moviefilm is a bit of a tired take on Sascha Baron-Cohen's spoof characters. There's little here you haven't seen before, with empty shocks and janky setups; all merged together to form a "plot".

The laughs are few. This is a dull, dated film. Skip.

The characters and set-up are fine, but there's little new here. The social media framing doesn't go far enough to give a new spin.

#FF20 The King of Staten Island is a better comedy than I expected. Both Pete Davidson and Bill Burr deliver some great moments, grounded in some emotional weight.

Good pace, good length, but with one or two dead-ends.

#FF20 The Babysitter: Killer Queen is very much a sequel to the first one, amped up.

Overstylised, ridiculous gore, over-the-top acting, and more silliness. The story is pretty flimsy, with a few set-ups for not very much pay-off.

#FF20 Hillbilly Elegy fails to deliver a compelling narrative.

There’s the heart of a good story here, brought down by Hollywood schmaltz and cliched plot devices.

Glenn Close and Amy Adam’s put in fantastic performances, but Basso less so.

#FF20 Enola Holmes didn't work for me. While the cast are charming, the plot they're running through feels forced and overlong; a series of set pieces and encounters, flimsily connected. None of the characters earned their emotional beats.

#FF20 The Other Lamb follows a cult member starting to become disillusioned with her leader.

This film is gorgeous: from the saturated colours against the natural, to some of the vistas. Stunning cinematogrpahy.

The plot is lacking. The changes and ending feel cliched. Decent.

#FF20 The Trial Of The Chicago 7 is a look at government power, protest, and counter-culture, through the lens of a courtroom drama.

Strong performances from an excellent cast, tight dialogue, and excellent structuring have the film going at a great pace.

#FF20 Get Duked is a decent dark comedy, that clearly takes inspiration from Hot Fuzz, both tonally and visually.

It's not quite as slick as Wright's work, but has some very funny moments, neat visuals, and a fun plot.

#FF20 I'm Thinking of Ending Things is a difficult movie.

The conversation at the start is excellent, and builds tension, warps into unease, and a creeping horror. The last act drops the ball, focussing on indulgence, not delivery.

Performances are all excellent.

#FF20 Spree is a fairly broad and somewhat satirical look at what streaming and influencer culture does to people, as we follow a guy who decides on a dangerous path forward.

Reasonably well shot, decent pacing, and a bit silly. It's all fairly predictable. Okay.

#FF20 The Devil All The Time is less than the sum of its parts.

A really good cast are mired in various plots we've seen before that tie together in a way that seems forced. It suffers from horrible narration: have the actors show me, don't tell me.

#FF20 Freaks: You're One Of Us is a German superhero story about people whose powers have been suppressed.

It's fine, if entirely predictable and chock full of stereotypes. There are a few neat moments, but mostly this is just mild entertainment.

#FF20 Bill & Ted Face The Music is everything no-one needed. It brings back old characters with nods and winks, adds new ones that are uninteresting, and mostly tries to get by on nostalgia.

Twenty minutes in you'll know exactly what's going to happen.

#FF20 7500 says Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a co-pilot fighting off a hijacking attempt.

A solid one location film, with great sound design, tense moments, and some neat plotting. The last 20-30 minutes drag a little, but it holds up overall.

The performances are fine with some very neat shots (and one that is a bit too clever), but the script mistakes running frantically between places with action. Much of the story is flat and expositional.

Despite a solid cast, it's a bit of a mess. The script feels underwritten, bumbling from set piece to set piece in a clunky way.

The action itself is bad: a mess of edits that makes it difficult to enjoy any of it.

#FF20 Days of the Bagnold Summer is a charming story about a single mum and her metalhead son.

It perfectly plays teenage grump and awkwardness against a librarian in cardigan. The neat cinematography provides lots of beautiful shots and framing.

Funny, sweet, and worth seeing.

#FF20 An American Pickle is a fish out of water buddy comedy, about a man preserved in brine for 100 years.

It has moments of humour, but is ultimately a bit one note. Neither of Seth Rogan's characters are particularly 2-dimensional.

#FF20 Never Rarely Sometimes Always is an important look at how difficult it can be to get an abortion in the US.

Shot in a grounded style, the quietness amplifies the reality being shown. The performances are equally subtle.

#FF29 Tenet is a Nolan film, through and through.

Spectacular action and a complicated narrative, with a great performance by Washington. Also suffers from being excessively expositional, and having terrible sound design, as with most of his films.

#FF20 Family Romance, LLC is a fascinating look at Japanese businesses who rent family members, like a father for your wedding.

Presented in a documentary style, the drama that unfolds is subtle and human. Herzog makes his protagonist relatable, despite his business.

#FF20 Wasp Network has a good first hour, setting up several characters in this story about how the Cuban government would infiltrate organisations in Florida.

The second hour? Feels like they really need a lot longer.

#FF20 Hamilton lives up to its reputation as an exceptionally polished musical, mixing styles to create something fresh.

Even at 3 hours, it rushes a lot, with a lot of tell-don't-show storytelling. Lots of characters, particularly the women, are pretty flat.

#FF20 The Old Guard lives up to its billing: a Summer blockbuster for lockdown. Not as spectacular as it might be, but never looks cheap.

The premise is decent, but some of the worldbuilding a bit heavyhanded. Some decent action. Some not so decent.

#FF20 Palm Springs sits neatly in one of my favourite tropes: time-loops. This is Groundhog Day at a wedding, if Andie MacDowell's character was also in on the loop.

Funny, sweet, dumb, inventive, and with a bunch of neat twists.

Samberg and Milioti make this great.

#FF20 The Assistant is a look at how people become complicit in sexual harassment, through utter mundanity and bullying.

The first 30 minutes work without words: painting a picture of the drudge of office life, with clues sprinkled around.

#FF20 Nobody Knows I'm Here is about a reclusive former child singer.

Each new bit of information about his circumstances complicates the story just enough to make it interesting again.

#FF20 VFW is about veterans protecting a girl from drug-fuelled, almost zombie-like punks.

It's intentionally trashy, b-movie fodder. Grim, gory, and over-the-top in every respect.

The dialogue is awful and the characters unpleasant. Decent practical effects.

It's a not particularly subtle take on patriarchy and misogyny, going back and forward over the first year after the outbreak.

#FF20 The Night Clerk is a dull, lifestyle movie that has somehow got a solid cast.

That said, the cast are given very little to do, other than crawl through the boring, predictable plot at a snail's pace.
